Prose log with Cecile
Who: Percival and Cecile (
cmdr_cecile)
When: this afternoon
Where: near the gate
What: Percival applies to be a castle guard
Percival decided his self-imposed "time off" was over, and in order to get back to work, he needed to find Cecile. Naturally, he went toward the castle gate first, all suited up in his armor even if one of the arm guards chafed a healing bruise or two.
The guard was crouched down, hunched over a small patch of mud. Her feather drooped over lazily, heavy with the humidity from the weather. She was intently watching the mud as if waiting for something to happen.
Clanking up behind her, Percival tilted his head curiously. "Er, Lady Cecile? Are you all right?"
"Oh!! Sir Percival!" Cecile scrambled to her feet and brushed her knees off. "I was waiting for the flowers. They grew so quickly and then died away--I thought perhaps there would be more coming soon, so if I watched them close enough, I could save them before they died too!"
"Oh dear..." Percival's brow furrowed a bit. "The flowers are dying? Do you suppose it's from the extra sun? That can't be good at all."
"Is that it? I didn't know if maybe I just wasn't watering it enough! Usually they don't come up so early in March, so I got really excited! Or... or maybe I watered them too much..."
"Well, I'm not exactly an expert, but I would think they sprouted so early because of the sun," Percival said thoughtfully, falling back on his farmboy wisdom. "Plants don't respond to the heat, but rather the light itself. The second sun is high in the sky and awake much longer than the real one, that's probably why they sprang up already."
The helmet in her feathers seemed to droop more. "Oh... wait, wait! What if I stand over them??"
Percival couldn't help but give her a pitying smile. "You're quite resourceful, Lady Cecile, but I don't think your skirt is wide enough to give shade to all the plants around the castle."
"T-true," she flustered, then straightened, remembering she was in the presence of one of the six mighty knights of Zexen. "I have a feeling you didn't come out here to look at the mud with me though!"
"Ah, no, I actually have a mission," Percival admitted, still smiling. "With your permission, I would like to formally request to join the castle guard, under your authority."
What an honor! For a moment, all she could do was stare openmouthed (in a quite unladylike and certainly unknightly manner). "S-serious? Seriously serious??"
"Yes, quite serious," Percival chuckled, hoping that his posture and smile backed up his words.
"I am extremely honored!!" Cecile saluted so swiftly that she ended up hitting the brow of her helmet. "This is wonderful! You can start right away! I wonder where you will patrol--do you know where you might like to? What shift do you think you'd like? Is there anyone in particular you might wish to patrol with? Perhaps Lady Alenia..."
Percival grinned. "The honor is mine, Lady Cecile," he assured with a fist over his heart in a traditional Zexen salute. "Thank you. I have been around the castle for more than a year but I didn't want my...er, abilities to go to waste. You may use me as you wish, my only request is that I have the early mornings free to look after my horse."
"I would be more than happy to! Budehuc will be ten hundred times safer with your help! I... I hope you do not feel like you are devaluing yourself... I mean... you are one of the six mighty Zexen knights! And... well, as much as this is truly the most wonderful job in the world, it's not quite the same as that."
"Don't worry about me, milady. This is my choice, I want to do it." Percival set his hands on his hips, nodding down at her. "There isn't usually much call for a mighty knight around here. As long as I'm in the habit of patrolling anyway, I may as well be an official guard."
Cecile extended her hand out after a moment in the gesture of a deal-sealing handshake. "I, Cecile Brown, garrison commander of Budehuc, hereby welcome you to be an official member of the guards!"
Beaming, Percival shook her hand smartly. "Then I, Percival Fraulein, do hereby pledge my services to you so long as I am stationed at Budehuc." He added a wink. "Does that sound grand enough?"
"I do not think it could become much grander, or else it would be in danger of becoming grandiose."
"It would indeed," Percival laughed. "And we wouldn't want that. We don't want our heads to get too large for our helms." He breathed a happy sigh and relaxed. "I'm sure you'll be tickled to have one of the mighty knights calling you 'commander' now, hm?"
Cecile blushed and rubbed her nose. "I suppose I have not had such a peculiar thing since..." she faltered for a moment, grappling with the mixed memory of the last time someone of intimidating status called her commander, then continued. "It is the highest honor indeed; I almost think we should have a party to celebrate!"
"Oh, you don't need to go to that kind of trouble for me," Percival assured, waving his hands. "Thank you, though. It's very kind of you, milady. I'll settle for simply working hard, and being useful to you."
"Oh, you win this time. But next time you're not getting off so easily! You'll get your party yet!" Cecile saluted again. "You will report here for your first patrolling session at noon tomorrow! I trust that will be plenty of time for your morning!"
Percival laughed at her threat, it was just too cute not to. "Yes, ma'am," he acknowledged with his own salute. "I will be here, and well-prepared indeed. I look forward to it."
